Beds, Mattresses and Duvets

Before jumping into bedding sizes, it's best to start from the beginning and look at beds, mattresses and duvet sizes which are what dictate the size of all bedding.

What are the UK Bed Sizes?

The journey to perfect bedding sizes starts with the bed itself. Here's a breakdown of UK bed sizes and who they might be best suited for:

Bed - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single 90 x 190 cm 3'0'' x 6'3''
Double 135 x 190 cm 4'6'' x 6'3''
King 150 x 200 cm 5'0'' x 6'6''
Super King 180 x 200 cm 6'0'' x 6'6''
  • Single: Ideal for solo sleepers, children, or guest rooms.
  • Double: Perfect for couples or individuals who enjoy extra space.
  • King: A spacious option for those seeking luxury and comfort.
  • Super King: The ultimate choice for indulgence, suitable for master bedrooms.

What are the Mattress Sizes?

Mattresses naturally follow the bed sizes, forming the base for fitted and flat sheets. Here's a look at standard UK mattress sizes:

Mattress - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single 90 x 190 cm 3'0'' x 6'3''
Double 135 x 190 cm 4'6'' x 6'3''
King 150 x 200 cm 5'0'' x 6'6''
Super King 180 x 200 cm 6'0'' x 6'6''

What are the Duvet Sizes?

Duvets naturally follow the mattress sizes but are slightly larger to allow for complete coverage and this is also reflected in the bedding sizes. Here's a look at standard UK duvet sizes:

Duvet Cover - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single 135 x 200 cm 53 x 79"
Double 200 x 200 cm 79 x 79"
King  225 x 220 cm 89 x 87"
Super King 260 x 220 cm 102 x 87"

Fitted and Flat Sheets Sizes: Tailored for Comfort

Fitted and flat sheets are designed to match mattress sizes, ensuring a seamless fit. Here are the standard UK bedding sizes for Fitted & Flat Sheets:

Fitted Sheets - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single 90 x 190 cm (31/36cm deep) 35 x 75" ( 12.2"/14.1" deep)
Double 135 x 190 cm (31/36cm deep) 53 x 75" ( 12.2"/14.1" deep)
King 150 x 200 cm (31/36cm deep) 59 x 79" ( 12.2"/14.1" deep)
Super King 180 x 200 cm (31/36cm deep) 71 x 79" ( 12.2"/14.1" deep)

Flat Sheets - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single  180 x 260 cm 71 x 102"
Double 230 x 260 cm 91 x 102"
King 275 x 275 cm 108 x 108"
Super King 305 x 275 cm 120 x 108"

What's the difference between fitted sheets and flat sheets?

The fitted sheets are made to fit perfectly around the mattress corners using an elastic band hidden inside the sheet. This usually makes the sheets stay in place throughout the night, no matter how much you move in your sleep. The slight downside is that they take a bit longer to fit on the mattress than a flat sheet.

The flat sheets are made to cover the mattress entirely from all sides which means they usually are much larger than the standard mattress sizes. The flat sheets are easy to put on top of your mattress but the downside is they will move around during sleep a lot more than the fitted sheets.

Duvet Covers: Embracing Elegance

Duvet cover sizes follow the sizes of duvets, adding a touch of style and warmth. Here are the standard UK sizes for Duvet Covers:

Duvet Covers - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Single 135 x 200 cm 53.1 x 78.7"
Double 200 x 200 cm 78.7 x 78.7"
King 225 x 220 cm 88.5 x 86.6
Super King 260 x 220 cm 102.3 x 86.6"

Pillowcases: The Final Touch

Made to fit your standard pillow, pillowcases complete the bedding ensemble, with standard pillowcase sizes designed for most pillows.

Pillowcases - UK Sizes Metric (cm) Imperial (inches)
Standard Pillowcase 50 x 75cm 19.6" x 29.5"
Square Pillowcase 65 x 65cm 25.5" x 25.5"

Standard pillowcases are sometimes also referred to as Housewife Pillowcases. These are slightly different from the Oxford Style Pillowcases that have a wide stitched hem around the border which is usually between 5-10cm. The Housewife/Standard Pillowcases have a neatly sewn edge that fits perfectly on the pillow. Just like the Standard pillowcase, the size of the Oxford style pillowcase is 50 x 75cm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are UK bedding sizes?
UK bedding sizes follow specific dimensions for various bedding elements, including duvet covers, fitted sheets, and pillowcases. The sizes mentioned above are standard across the UK, ensuring a consistent fit and comfort.

What size is a 200x200 bed?
A 200x200 cm bed corresponds to a standard UK Double size for duvet covers. It's a popular choice for couples or individuals who enjoy extra space.

Should I wash bed sheets at 30 or 40?
Washing bed sheets at 30°C or 40°C depends on the fabric and care instructions. Delicate fabrics may require a cooler 30°C wash, while standard cotton sheets can usually be washed at 40°C for effective cleaning.

Is queen size bigger than king?

Actually, in the UK, the King size bed is typically larger than the Queen size. The confusion may arise from different naming conventions in other countries. The Queen size bed in the UK is 120cm x 190cm (4' x 6'3") while the King is 150cm x 200cm(5'0" x 6'6"). Always refer to the specific dimensions to ensure the correct size.

Is a queen bigger than a double?
In the UK, a Queen size bed is often considered smaller than a Standard Double size and is sometimes called a Small Double. The Standard Double is 135cm x 190cm(4'6"x 6'3") while a Queen/Small Double is 120cm x 190cm (4' x 6'3"). However, naming conventions may vary, so it's essential to check the exact dimensions.
